How to Choose a Halogen Moisture Analyzer

A practical buying guide: the specifications that actually matter — weighing capacity, moisture readability, heating method, temperature range and test modes — and how to match the instrument to your sample.

What a halogen moisture analyzer actually measures

A halogen moisture analyzer (also called a moisture determination balance) uses the loss-on-drying principle. A halogen lamp heats the sample in a weighing pan; the built-in balance tracks the weight loss in real time, and the instrument calculates moisture content as a percentage:

Moisture % = (initial weight − final weight) ÷ initial weight × 100

Because heating and weighing happen in one closed unit, you get a result in minutes instead of the hours an oven method takes. It is the de-facto fast method for incoming inspection, production control and quality labs.

1. The specifications that matter most

Weighing capacity

This is the maximum sample-plus-dish weight. Common laboratory ranges are 50 g and 120 g. Choose by your typical sample size: larger or wetter samples need the higher capacity.

Moisture readability

Readability is what the display can resolve. Typical figures are 0.01 %, 0.001 % and (on the most precise models) 0.0001 g / 0.001 %. For routine incoming/outgoing inspection 0.01 % is plenty; R&D, pharmaceuticals and reference work want 0.001 % or better.

Heating temperature range

Halogen lamps typically cover 45–160 °C. Match the ceiling to your material — grains and many foods dry well at lower temperatures, while some plastics, chemicals and minerals need the upper range. Too much heat can scorch or decompose a sample and corrupt the result.

Test modes / drying programs

Automatic shut-off can be timed, based on a stable weight-change rate, or manual. Instruments that store several test modes let one unit handle many different materials without re-configuring each time.

Heating uniformity

Halogen heating is fast and even, which is why it became the default for modern analyzers. Even heating is what keeps repeatability acceptable.

2. Halogen vs. infrared vs. the oven method

Halogen

Fast, even heating; affordable; the best all-round choice for most labs and factories. Minutes per test.

Infrared (IR)

Lower lamp cost but less even heating than halogen; acceptable for coarse, non-critical checks.

Oven + balance

The reference (gravimetric) method — most accurate, but takes hours and ties up a balance and an operator.

3. Match the instrument to your sample

  • Grain, food, feeds: 0.01 % readability is usually enough; prioritise capacity and a simple, repeatable program.
  • Pharmaceuticals: choose 0.001 %+ readability and confirm traceable calibration and records for GMP.
  • Chemicals, plastics, coatings: look for a higher temperature ceiling and a corrosion-resistant pan.
  • Tobacco, textiles, environmental samples: a wide range of stored test modes avoids per-material setup.

4. Interface, records and compliance

For any documented workflow you will want an RS-232 (or newer) interface to a printer or PC so each test is saved with its result, date and method. This matters for traceability under ISO/GLP and for audit trails.

5. Quick selection checklist

  • What is the largest sample you weigh? → sets capacity.
  • How precise must the moisture figure be? → sets readability.
  • What temperature does the material tolerate? → sets the heating ceiling.
  • How many different materials? → sets how many stored test modes you need.
  • Do you need saved, printable records? → sets the interface requirement.

Our MA series at a glance

The MA series halogen moisture analyzers cover 0–120 g (MA120 family) and 0–50 g (MA54E) weighing ranges, with moisture readability from 0.01 % down to 0.001 % (MA54E reaches 0.0001 g / 0.001 %). Heating is adjustable 45–160 °C, 10 test modes are stored, the pan is Ø 110 mm and RS-232 connects a printer or PC. They are built for grain, food, tobacco, pharmaceutical, chemical and mineral moisture checks.
